India Faces Intense Athlete Endurance Test with AFI’s Dual Selection Policy for 2026 CWG and Asian Games

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has introduced a rigorous selection policy for the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Glasgow and the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. These two prestigious events are scheduled just seven weeks apart, creating a unprecedented challenge for Indian athletes.

Dual Selection Trials

AFI mandates athletes to participate in separate trials for each event, with the aim to send the best performers to both competitions. This means athletes will face:

  • Two high-stakes qualification meets
  • Continuous elite fitness maintenance
  • Optimized recovery and peak performance management

Concerns and Challenges

While this dual-trials system aims to maximize medal prospects, experts and athletes have raised concerns including:

  1. Increased risk of injury and burnout due to tight scheduling
  2. Difficulty managing training loads amid travel fatigue
  3. Demanding mental resilience alongside physical endurance

Conditioning coaches warn that the short gap between events limits adequate recovery time, a factor which was traditionally considered by sports federations worldwide.

Voices from the Field

AFI President Mohan Singh emphasized the organization’s confidence in the athletes: “Our goal is to maximize medal prospects in both games. We trust our athletes to rise to this challenge and assist them in their preparation.”

Athlete Kavya Mehta, specializing in the 400m hurdles, shared her perspective, stating, “It’s a tough road ahead. We must plan carefully with our support teams to avoid injuries and keep our focus sharp. It’s both exciting and demanding.”

The Road Ahead

The upcoming Commonwealth Games will attract more than 70 nations and aim to highlight India’s expanding talent in track and field. The Asian Games will feature top athletes from across Asia, further intensifying the competition.

The sports community is closely monitoring the AFI’s dual-trial policy, as its outcomes could influence future strategies for athletes competing in multiple major events within a short timeframe.
