Dhoni Launches Last Over League for Rural 35+ Cricketers

Dhoni

In a move that combines nostalgia, innovation, and social impact, former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has announced the launch of an all-new cricket tournament titled “Last Over League” – exclusively for rural players aged 35 and above.

Unlike any other tournament in India’s cricketing landscape, this initiative focuses on men from small towns and villages who, for various life reasons, never got the opportunity to pursue their cricketing dreams. Now, with this unique league, Dhoni offers them a shot at glory, no matter their age.

A League Like No Other

Speaking at a press conference in his hometown of Ranchi, Dhoni explained his vision:

“Cricket in India is worshipped, but mostly by the young. What about those who gave up their dreams for jobs, farming, or family? This league is for them. Because passion doesn’t retire at 35.”

The Last Over League (LOL) will be the first-of-its-kind cricket platform in the world where only players aged 35 and above from rural areas will be eligible. The tournament aims to mix passion, sportsmanship, and a much-needed second chance.

Structure and Format:

Here’s how the league is structured:

Eligibility: Male players aged 35 and above, residing in rural India, with no professional cricketing background.

Tournament Format:

Phase 1: District-level tryouts and qualifiers

Phase 2: State-level knockout rounds

Final Phase: National Finale in Ranchi

Match Format: Each game will be 10 overs per side, keeping physical stamina in mind.

Teams: Each district will have its team, with a total of 12 players, one physio, and a local coach.

The league will be launched across 4 states initially — Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, and expand to others in 2026.

Players Speak: Dreams Rekindled

Already, the buzz has reached small villages and remote regions.

In Hazaribagh, 39-year-old mechanic Amit Tiwari said:

“Cricket was my first love. But I had to start working at 18. I never thought I’d wear a jersey again. Dhoni sir has given me a reason to dream again.”

In Mirzapur, UP, local teacher Naushad Khan (42) has formed a training group of fellow 35+ hopefuls.

“Humari team ka naam hai ‘Second Innings Squad’. Ab har Sunday match hota hai.”

Partnerships and Social Impact

Dhoni has partnered with grassroots NGOs, rural banks, and sports-tech startups to execute the project. Several brands, including Amul, Mahindra Rise, and Hindustan Unilever’s Project Shakti, are in talks for sponsorships.

But this isn’t just about cricket. The league will also:

Offer free medical check-ups during camps

Provide basic kits and nutrition support

Organize coaching workshops for rural youth

Offer cash prizes and recognition to standout performers

The “Player of the Tournament” will receive a Rs. 2 lakh cash prize, a mentorship with a Ranji-level coach, and a year-long contract to coach local under-14 players in his district.

Telecast & Technology

Matches will be streamed via regional YouTube channels, with select games broadcast on Doordarshan in Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Chhattisgarhi.

AI-based fitness tracking tools and performance analytics will also be introduced, making even the rural players feel like pros.

What’s Next?

Registrations Open: July 15, 2025

District Matches Begin: August 10, 2025

National Finale in Ranchi: October 2, 2025 (Gandhi Jayanti)

Dhoni will personally attend the finale and present trophies and awards.

A Cricketing Revolution with a Heart

The Last Over League is not just a sporting event – it’s a statement, a gesture, and a revival of dreams for lakhs of unsung cricket lovers.

In a cricketing world driven by youth and numbers, MS Dhoni’s new innings is a bold reminder:

“Sometimes, the best part of your life… is your last one.”
