February 21, Karachi: South Africa opener Ryan Rickelton made a sensational debut in One-Day International cricket, scoring his maiden century to lead his side to a comprehensive 107-run victory over Afghanistan in their opening match of the Champions Trophy Group B at the National Stadium in Karachi on Friday.
Rickelton’s fluent 103 runs formed the backbone of South Africa’s imposing total of 315 for 6 in their 50 overs. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, South Africa made the most of a wicket that provided pace and bounce, conditions that were more reminiscent of their home conditions in the Highveld than a typical subcontinent pitch. Rickelton’s elegant knock, which included several boundaries, was supported by solid contributions from his teammates, including a brisk 45 from Aiden Markram.

Afghanistan struggled to contain the South African batsmen, with their bowlers failing to build any sustained pressure. Rashid Khan, one of their standout bowlers, was the pick of the attack with 2 wickets for 46 runs, but his efforts were not enough to stop the South African surge.
In reply, Afghanistan fought hard, particularly through Rahmat Shah, who scored a gritty 90 runs. However, the Afghan chase was always under pressure as South Africa’s seamers kept the run rate in check and picked up regular wickets. Afghanistan never truly threatened to reach the required total, and they were eventually bowled out for 208 in 43.3 overs, falling short by 107 runs. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi were the standout performers with the ball, each picking up key wickets and maintaining tight control throughout the Afghan innings.
With the win, South Africa showed their dominance in the opening match of Group B, making a solid statement in the Champions Trophy. Afghanistan’s loss, despite some valiant individual performances, showed they will need to improve their all-round game if they are to compete effectively in the tournament.
Looking ahead, Australia and England will face off in the second Group B fixture in Lahore on Saturday, with both teams eager to get their campaign underway after South Africa’s impressive victory. The outcome of that clash will have a significant impact on the group standings as the tournament progresses.
South Africa’s all-round performance in this match has set the stage for an exciting and competitive tournament, with more thrilling cricket expected in the coming days.
