MP Dominates Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 as Odisha Shows Strong Rise

The Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025, held at the picturesque Dal Lake in Srinagar, turned into an intense competition showcasing the prowess and dedication of athletes from across the nation. The festival, which took place from August 20 to August 24, featured thrilling contests in rowing, canoeing, and kayaking events.

Outstanding Performances by Madhya Pradesh and Odisha

Madhya Pradesh dominated the festival, securing the overall championship with an impressive haul of 15 gold, 9 silver, and 6 bronze medals. Their athletes demonstrated exceptional consistency and endurance, captivating the audience and cementing the state’s status in the water sports arena.

Odisha showcased a remarkable rise in the competition, finishing second with 10 golds, 12 silvers, and 8 bronzes. This achievement reflects the state’s increasing investment in aquatic sports and focused talent development. Odisha participants particularly excelled in kayak sprints and canoe marathon categories, exhibiting speed and refined technique.

Record-Breaking Highlights

The festival witnessed some spectacular record-breaking performances, most notably by Akash Singh from Madhya Pradesh. He set a new national record in the men’s single sculls, completing the race in an outstanding 6 minutes 42 seconds. Akash shared his enthusiasm: “Breaking the record here on Dal Lake motivates me even more for the Olympics.”

Steps Toward the 2028 Olympics

National coach Meera Joshi emphasized the significance of such events in preparing athletes for international stages:

“Events like these provide invaluable experience. We are identifying talent that can compete on the world stage.”

This sentiment reflects the festival’s role as a vital platform for scouting and nurturing future Olympians.
