Modern Pentathlon Reception -UIPM Announce Combined World Championship for Biathle, Triathle & Laser Run

Modern

Budapest: In an effort to reboot Modern Pentathlon and grow the sport’s audience, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) has announced its first combined World Championship for Biathle, Triathle & Laser Run – taking place this September in Alexandria, Egypt.

This new format represents a fundamental change to how Modern Pentathlon exists and is designed to increase its visibility, simplify audience interaction, and deliver an entry pathway for young athletes into the full five discipline Olympic Pentathlon.

Dr. Klaus Schormann, UIPM President, said it was the “while honouring its traditions,” opportunity to modernise the sport. The reboot comes after the UIPM created controversy in 2022 when it suggested to drop equestrian show jumping and replace it with obstacle racing, a decision made after the Tokyo Olympics had placed pressure on equestrian sports over horse treatment.

Now, it wants to shine its highlights on the sport’s entry level formats. Biathle (run-swim-run), Triathle (shoot-swim-run) and Laser Run (run-shoot) are lightweight, faster, more kinetic, and easier to organise – they are used and popular in school and youth competitions.

This championship does represent more than just a new tournament, it represents a change of direction for the DNA of the sport. With ratings from TV networks declining and rule-based confusion, UIPM has not clicked with the up-and-coming audience. Bringing together three explosive events, at least, this new format has potential to become a format changer.

Additionally, the location—Alexandria—has become a growing epicenter of Pentathlon development through Ahmed El-Gendy’s recent medal winning performance during Tokyo 2020.

Athletes have generally expressed favorable thoughts about the move. French triathlete Julie Berton believes, “These formats give us more competitions at higher-scale. It is fun, it is for audiences. Finally, my family understand what I do!”

Furthermore, Laser Run world champion Dmytro Kyrychenko said, “It was fast, it was intense! And tactical! This is really what our sport needs.”

Analysts believe this represents the best opportunity UIPM will have towards revitalizing a tattered Olympic sport. Sports marketing consultant Jenna Li stated, “Pentathlon has always struggled who they are as an equity. This is a media friendly, youth heard reboot. It may not be traditional—but necessary.”

The investment from countries like South Korea, Brazil and Egypt toward youth Laser Run programs reinforces this direction.

If the championship is successful, then it may not only be regular format change, but possibly become an Olympic qualifier in the future as well. The UIPM will be paying close attention to all metrics including audience numbers, broadcasting/outlet reach, and social media engagement.

Tickets are expected to be reasonably priced to give the local community an opportunity and the event will definitely be streamed globally.

Modern Pentathlon is charging ahead with a major re-brand and with the triple threat championship, it is clearly looking at a bright future. Whether it has the ability to keep that attention with a busy sports calendar, we will have to see, but this experiment could possibly change the way the world views one of the oldest and most misunderstood sports of the Olympics.
